The top hat pipe connector was pushed tightly onto the top end of the antenna. When the antenna was erected, it was connected directly to ground and checked for resonant frequency using a dip meter. It is very important that a very good ground connection is used. I have not tried this antenna with a counterpoise.

Originally a simple manually tuned loading unit was used but this was found to be inconvenient and so it was later replaced with a remote motorized unit.
